To guide the OPA in the development of the updated IPSP, the government issued a Supply Mix Directive on February 17, 2011. This directive outlines the requirements that OPA must meet in developing the updated Plan (IPSP II). Through IPSP II, the OPA is required to meet government’s goals in several areas:

  • Conservation
  • Nuclear generation
  • Phase-out of coal-fired generation
  • Renewable generation
  • Hydroelectric generation
  • Natural gas-fired generation
  • Transmission
  • Development of a smart grid
  • Reliability and operability

The OPA is required to address certain resource targets while including assumptions about the future demand for electricity and other associated resources. The plan will then be reviewed by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) and stakeholders.
