Electricity is essential to our everyday lives. It powers our hospitals, schools, industries, homes and businesses. We depend on it for our well-being and it contributes to the quality of life in our communities.
Ontario has come a long way since the days not that long ago when we were facing serious supply issues and uncertainty about whether the lights and air conditioners were going to stay on during hot summer days.
The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) was given the legislated mandate in 2005 of ensuring a reliable, sustainable and cost-effective electricity system for the future of Ontario and the 13 million people who live here.
The development of a long-term plan is central to that mandate. In 2007, the OPA produced a detailed Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP I) as a guide for the province’s electricity sector for the next 20 years. Initiatives from the first plan have been transforming Ontario’s electricity and have allowed the focus to shift from restoring reliability to making the system greener, cleaner and smarter. The IPSP is intended to be a living document that constantly looks 20 years ahead and is updated to respond to changes in such things as consumer demand, changing generation technology and evolving economic conditions.
The 2011 Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP II) will be a blueprint for our province’s electricity system that outlines needed investments in conservation, generation and transmission.
