Commercial Operation on November 22, 2010
Wawaitin Generating Station consists of demolition and removal of an existing 90-year-old powerhouse and all of the associated electrical and mechanical equipment, and refurbishment of existing dam structures at the north end of Kenogamissi Lake.
The new Wawaitin Generating Station is a 2-unit "run-of-the-river" hydroelectric generating facility with a nameplate capacity of 15.0 MW located on the Mattagami River, at the outlet of Kenogamissi Lake, about 25 kilometres southwest of the city of Timmins, Ontario.
The new powerhouse which will be located approximately within 100 metres of the existing powerhouse consists of two vertical Francis turbine-generator sets. The turbines are fed by two (3 metre diametre and 800 metre long) steel/wheholite penstocks connected to a new intake through an open channel. The new intake is equipped with trash racks and head gates. The flow will return to Mattagami River through a new tailrace channel.
The station is operated in accordance with the Water Management Plan filed with the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The plant is connected to the existing Hydro One operated local distribution system at the embedded connection point through a step-up transformer.
When completed, it is estimated this hydroelectric generating facility will generate approximately 78,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy per year.
