Sandy Falls Generating Station (5.5 MW) - Timmins: Mattagami River

Print

Commercial Operation on October 27, 2010

Sandy Falls Generating Station consists of the demolition and removal of an existing 90-year-old powerhouse and all of the associated electrical and mechanical equipment, plus the refurbishment of existing dam structures.

The new Sandy Falls Generating Station is a single unit "run-of-the-river" hydroelectric generating facility with a nameplate capacity of 5.5 MW located on the Mattagami River, about one kilometre northwest of the City of Timmins, Ontario.

The new powerhouse will be located approximately 200 metres east and upstream of the old powerhouse and consists of a single vertical Kaplan double-regulated turbine-generator set.  The new powerhouse is directly coupled to a modified intake structure equipped with trash racks and head gate.  The flow will return to Mattagami River through a new tailrace channel.

The plant is connected to the existing Hydro One operated local distribution system at the embedded connection point through a step-up transformer.

When completed, it is estimated this hydroelectric generating facility will generate approximately 33,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy per year.
