OPA Receives Six Proposals for Northern York Region Generating Facility - November 7, 2008
The Ontario Power Authority has received six (6) proposals from four (4) proponents to design, build, and operate a new 350 megawatt natural gas-fired peaking generating facility in Northern York Region. These proponents became eligible to submit proposals after qualifying as applicants under an earlier request for qualifications. The new plant will address the needs of the growing Northern York Region for a reliable and secure supply of clean electricity, while at the same time contributing to the Provincial commitment to shut down coal-fired generation by 2014. The proposals will be evaluated by an independent panel and the process will be monitored by an external fairness advisor, with the final selection to be publicly announced by year-end. Following selection, the winning project must continue with the municipal and regional land-use approval processes, as well as complete the Provincial environmental assessment process. It is important to note that only one project will be selected through this process. The following proposals (listed alphabetically by Proponent) were received:
