Thorold Cogeneration Project (236.4 MW) - Thorold
In Commercial Operation on March 28, 2010
Thorold Cogeneration Project is a natural gas-fired 305 MW industrial cogeneration facility located in Thorold, Ontario. The project is capable of burning high and low pressure natural gas, as well as landfill gas. In addition to electricity, the adjacent paper mill will receive steam produced by the cogeneration facility.
The facility is located adjacent to the existing Abitibi-Consolidated Company of Canada (ACCC) paper mill. The facility is on land owned by ACCC.
Major equipment for the project consists of a GE 7FA gas turbine generator (GTG), one heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) with duct firing capability, one extraction/condensing steam turbine generator (STG), one back-pressure steam turbine generator and two auxiliary boilers capable of burning natural gas as well as landfill gas. The GTG and auxiliary boilers are equipped with low-NOx combustors for emissions control.

| Connection Point: | Step-up transformers (13.8/230 kV) will connect to a new overhead, 400m 230kV transmission line. The new line will be connected to the existing 230 kV line that supplies the mill. The cogeneration facility will produce electricity behind the meter, reducing the dependence of the facility on the municipal electrical supply. |
