Essar Cogeneration Facility (63.0 MW) - Sault Ste. Marie
Commercial Operation on June 13, 2009
Essar Cogeneration Facility is a by-product fuel fired 63.0 MW cogeneration facility located in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The facility will consume blast furnace and coke oven gas from Algoma Steel Inc. (ASI) to generate electricity at 34.5 kV and supply process steam for steel manufacturing operations.
The facility is located on the existing site of ASI and consists of two boilers burning by-product fuels to produce high pressure steam that is fed into a single condensing steam turbine generator. Dual controlled extraction is in place to supply process steam to ASI in addition to uncontrolled extraction for feed water heating purposes. The boilers are equipped with low NOx burners to reduce emissions.
