Birchmount Energy Centre is being expanded to include a natural gas fired 2.6 MW combined heat and power (CHP) facility and is located in the Town of Markham. In addition to electricity generation, the CHP facility will provide space heating and domestic hot water to buildings served by the Markham Centre District Energy System, owned and operated by Markham District Energy Inc.
The facility will consist of one natural gas fired reciprocating engine-generator set, heat recovery equipment, controls and switchgear. The CHP unit will be located in the existing Birchmount Energy Centre building structure and connected to the electrical distribution system at Markham MTS#3E.
