Bur Oak Energy Centre is being expanded to include a natural gas fired 3.25 MW combined heat and power (CHP) facility and is located in the Town of Markham. In addition to electricity generation, the CHP facility will provide space heating and domestic hot water to the new East Markham District Energy System, owned and operated by Markham District Energy Inc. The Bur Oak Energy Centre system supplies thermal energy to buildings in the area including the Markham Stouffville Hospital, East Markham Community Centre, a Fire Station, Health Services Building and new developments in the vicinity.
The CHP component of the plant will consist of one natural gas fired reciprocating engine-generator set, heat recovery equipment, controls and switchgear. The CHP equipment will be located within a pre-constructed cogeneration room within the Bur Oak Energy centre building, and will be connected to the electrical distribution system at Markham MTS#2.
