St. Marys Renewable Energy Centre is a host developed, 30.0 MW biomass fuelled cogeneration facility located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The facility will be developed within the existing footprint of the pulp and paper mill owned and operated by St. Marys Paper Corp.
Major equipment for the facility consists of a bubbling fluidized bed boiler designed to burn 1,100 tonnes/day of renewable biomass fuel to produce high pressure steam that is fed into a single extraction/condensing steam turbine generator. Other equipment includes a condenser/cooling tower that takes and discharges river water and a wood waste handling system, with on-site processing equipment including a hogger, reclaimer, belt conveyors and stack-out conveyors. The balance of plant equipment includes a water treatment plant designed to deliver boiler quality water using ion-exchange technology.
The Supplier has negotiated a secure biomass commitment from the Algoma and Northshore Crown Forests for the life of the project. Natural gas, used as a secondary fuel, will be mainly used for plant start up and stabilization.
The facility will be housed in a new building which minimizes noise emissions to the environment. The facility will have a baghouse for the treatment of exhaust gas. In addition, silencers will be used for building openings and vents to control noise level.
The facility will be connected to the IESO-controlled grid through the Great Lakes Power Clergue Transformer Station (TS).
