Commercial Operation on August 18, 2005
Eastview Landfill Gas Energy Plant by Envida Community Energy Inc. is a landfill gas fuelled electricity generating facility with a nameplate capacity of 2,775 kilowatts (kW) built in the City of Guelph, Ontario.
The project was declared commercial operation on August 18, 2005. The facility consists of three generating units. Each unit has a rated capacity of 925 kW. Landfill gas is being produced at the Eastview Landfill Site that is owned and operated by the City of Guelph.
The landfill site was opened in 1961 and was closed in October 2003 with approximately four million tonnes of solid, non-hazardous waste in place. Assessment indicated that a significant quantity of landfill gas will be produced at the Eastview site for the next few decades and the emissions will be at declining levels.
It was also estimated the Eastview site had reached its peak rate of landfill gas production in 2004 and the production rate was estimated to be more than 3,000 cubic metres per hour.
To collect the landfill gas to fuel the three generating units, wells at spacing of 40 metres with an average depth of 15 to 20 metres have been drilled at the site. Because the gas production is of a declining nature, the developer has been contracted with a lesser electricity generating capacity in the second half of the 20-year contract with the Ontario Power Authority.
The facility is connected to a 13.8 kV distribution feeder owned and operated by Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. This feeder is supplied by Hydro One owned Campbell Transformer Station.
