OPA Initiatives

The OPA leads the development of new elements to foster a more sustainable, competitive electricity sector, which will provide secure supplies of affordable power to Ontario’s electricity consumers.

Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program
The Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program reduces the barriers and sets payment rates for small energy producers who want to sell renewable energy to the provincial system. The program is now open for applications.

Integrated Power System Plan
Ontario is approaching a major milestone in the development of an electricity system. The OPA is developing Ontario's first Integrated Power System Plan in many years.

Clean Energy Standard Offer Program
Clean Energy Standard Offer Program
The Clean Energy Standard Offer Program (CESOP) will support small clean energy generators. The Program is intended to encourage participation by a variety of clean energy technologies, including natural gas-fired Combined Heat & Power (CHP), by-product fuel-fired generation projects, and generation projects fuelled by under-utilized energy (thermal or mechanical) sources.
Demand Response Program
Demand Response Programs
The OPA is actively working towards reducing electricity consumption and demand through programs that draw on our many partners in the conservation sector. One of these initiatives is Demand response, or DR.
AgNews
Electricity Conservation on Ontario Farms
The agriculture sector is an important element of the OPA’s business group’s conservation responsibilities.
EEMAC - Conserve the Light Gathering
First Nations and Métis Communities
The Ontario Power Authority and the Ontario Government view First Nations and Métis perspectives as an important factor in developing and implementing an electricity plan for the province.
Forward Electricity Market logo
Forward Electricity Market
Ontario's forward electricity trading has transitioned from the 2006 auction events facilitated by the OPA to screen trading with interactive bids and offers from market participants.
House
Housing Initiatives
The Ontario Power Authority has completed three housing initiatives and is actively developing new initiatives for the housing sector to be launched in 2008.
LDC
LDC Conservation and Demand Management Program
The Ontario Power Authority is working closely with Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) to develop conservation programs.
Local Area Supply
Local Area Supply
The Integrated Power System Plan (filed with the Ontario Energy Board in August 2007) identifies specific priorities for the near-term, including local gas-fired generation and local transmission.

2010 Power Pledge
Ontario's major 2010 Conservation Awareness Campaign - The Power Pledge - will launch on April 7. The province-wide energy conservation awareness campaign will encourage Ontarians to take simple conservation actions that will have lasting financial rewards and help fight climate change.
BOMA Toronto
BOMA Toronto CDM Program
The “BOMA Toronto CDM Program” is a three-year conservation and demand management program launched in spring 2007 that focuses on buildings over 25,000 square feet.

The Conservation Fund is aimed at supporting sector-specific conservation education and electricity reduction pilots.
Customer Entitlement Agents Logo
Customer Entitlement Agents (CEA) Initiative
The OPA is evaluating the potential role of Customer Entitlement Agents (CEAs) within Ontario as a mechanism to provide rate stability and transparency for consumers and a means to facilitate proper management of the electricity load risks in the forward market.

FIT Support Programs
These funds will help create a greener Ontario by boosting local involvement in renewable energy projects—whether they are wind, solar, biomass or hydroelectric ventures, among others. The Aboriginal Energy Partnerships Program seeks to maximize First Nations and Métis participation while helping to build the province’s energy supply. The program will provide funding for many of the key developmental stages needed to bring projects on stream, including: community energy plans, feasibility studies, resource assessment, technical research, developing business cases and the creation of an Aboriginal Renewable Energy Network. Through the Community Energy Partnerships Program, the province will provide one-time funding support to community groups to assist them with the developmental costs associated with renewable energy projects. The program will be managed through the Ontario Power Authority, which will retain a third-party agent to operate it. The agent will oversee applications, determine selection criteria and, finally, provide funding to qualified applicants. Ontario is also making it easier for municipalities to bring green energy projects to their communities. Through the Municipal Renewable Energy Program, the province will provide support to municipalities for extra costs associated with new renewable energy projects. While many of these costs are charged to the developers, it is expected some additional costs may arise. For more information, please see the Related Links below.
HCI
Hydroelectric Contract Initiative
As part of the province's commitment to increase Ontario's supply of clean, renewable generation, the OPA is developing a program to negotiate new contracts for qualified existing hydroelectric generation facilities in Ontario.
Industrial Energy Efficiency Program
Industrial Transmission Connected Electricity Efficiency Program
Conservation, including energy efficiency, is one of the best ways to manage energy costs, creating lasting operational savings and improving energy productivity. The Ontario Power Authority’s Industrial Accelerator is a new program designed to assist transmission-connected industrial electricity users to fast-track capital investment in major energy-efficiency projects.
New Construction Program
New Construction Program
The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is developing an integrated program of design assistance and financial incentives to motivate builders and developers to incorporate sustainable and energy-efficient features in new construction and major renovation projects.
